SIKKIM TREK
Sikkim is one of the least
visited of all the Himalyan lands, and remains pristine and
unspoilt. The jewel in Sikkims crown is surely Kanchanjunga
(8586m), the words third highest Peak. This majestic 5
summited mountain forms the spectacular backdrop on our trek.
Sikkim was previously an independent kingdom, ruled by a
dynasty, which descended from the Tibatan Royal family. Until
the end of nineteenth century, when Sikkim came under the
protection of Britain, very little was known about the
country, which was completely closed to outsiders. India took
over the protection of the territory in 1950 and in 1975
Sikkim became the 22nd state of India. Foreigners
were still not allowed to enter Sikkim, and it was not until
the early 1980s that the first trekking group was able to
negotiate access to strictly defined trekking routes. Like the
neighboring countries of Nepal and Bhutan,Sikkim has a great
variety of landscapes, ranging from intensively farmed lowland
valleys in the south, to a higher alpine environment in the
center of the country and unto the Himalayan peaks on the
northern and western margin.
